Itinerary

Friday, December 30 (Dinner)

Today we board our flight bound for sunny Southern California!  Get settled in your room at the 4-star Hilton Orange County for four nights.  Enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel as we get ready for our Rose Parade experience.

Saturday, December 31 (Breakfast, Dinner)

After breakfast, we’ll have a special preview of the Rose Parade as we visit one of the float building barns to watch the finishing touches being added to the floats.  We will see a variety of seeds, barks, grasses and beautiful flowers applied to the floats by professionals and volunteers.

Then we’re off to the races at Santa Anita Park, home to some of California’s most elite horse races and the location where the movie “Seabiscuit” was filmed.  Enjoy unobstructed views of the breathtaking San Gabriel Mountains during our afternoon of horseracing excitement.  The park offers an array of food and drink options at their conveniently located restaurants, bars, and concessions.

This evening is our big gala New Year’s Eve Party including an elegant dinner, dancing to the sounds of a live band, and the fun of a mock Monte Carlo-style casino.  There will be hats and party favors for all and a champagne toast to ring in the 2023 New Year!

Sunday, January 1, 2023 (Breakfast)   Happy New Year!

This morning we’ll board one of the Catalina Express ferries for a short one-hour cruise to Catalina Island, 22 miles off the coast of mainland California.  Once you arrive, the day is yours to get acquainted with the storybook town of Avalon.  Stroll along Avalon's quaint Mediterranean-style streets, have lunch and explore the wide variety of specialty shops that offer everything from tiles and pottery that are unique to Catalina.  Of course, you can’t forget the saltwater taffy!  While on the island, you will have the opportunity to book an optional excursion (additional fee) such as a tour of the historic Casino, a guided tour of Avalon, or rent a golf cart or bicycle to sightsee on your own this afternoon.

Shuttles will be provided this evening to South Coast Plaza, the west coast’s largest shopping center, for dinner on our own at one of their 30+ restaurants.

Monday, January 2 (Breakfast, Lunch)

An early morning breakfast buffet is included at the hotel this morning and then we’re off to the “parade of all parades.” We’ll travel to Pasadena and take our reserved grandstand seats along Colorado Boulevard to view the 134th Tournament of Roses Parade.  Enjoy the spectacular floats and marching bands participating in this tremendous event.  A souvenir program and blanket are included.  After the parade, we’ll return to the hotel for a special Southern California Backyard Style BBQ. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure.

This evening, our hotel’s ballroom will be transformed into a cinema for a private viewing of a Hollywood favorite.  You can pick up snacks or a picnic dinner from the hotel’s Marketplace to enjoy during the movie.

Tuesday, January 3 (Breakfast, Lunch)

We’ll depart our hotel after breakfast.  Our first stop is at the elegant Wilson Creek Winery, nestled in the   rolling hills of Temecula Valley, for a delicious lunch buffet featuring fresh, organic, farm-to-table gourmet cuisine.  After lunch, we’ll take a tour of the winery –  renowned as one of the most beautifully landscaped wineries in Southern California.  At key points throughout the tour we’ll be treated to a sampling of five Wilson Creek wines which may include barrel or tank tastings of exclusive wines not yet released!

Later this afternoon we check into the Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Spa.  With views of the San Diego skyline and Coronado Bridge, this 4-star resort boasts three pools along with many ways to relax.  Enjoy the bike rentals, beach chairs, fitness classes, tennis and sports courts – all complimentary!  After getting settled into our plush rooms, we’ll head across the bay to San Diego’s historic Old Town, the location of the first European settlement in California.  We’ll have some time to explore this area’s many shops and restaurants.

Wednesday, January 4 (Breakfast, Dinner)

Our day begins with a guided tour of San Diego. We will see such highlights as the Gaslamp  Quarter, Balboa Park and Coronado Island while our expert local guide educates us on California’s second largest city renowned for its idyllic climate and cultural variety.  Following the tour enjoy free time at charming Seaport Village, a 14-acre, harbor-side shopping and dining district.  Meander along the cobblestone streets, explore the many shops and have lunch on your own along the waterfront.  Upon our return to the hotel, the remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure to enjoy the hotel’s many amenities.  Later this evening, we’ll   enjoy a farewell dinner at Il Fornaio Coronado along the shoreline of San Diego Bay.

Thursday, January 5 (Breakfast)

The time has come to head back home.  On our flight from San Diego, we’ll be reminiscing about all the wonderful things we did in sunny, southern California!
